John Wardle Architects and NADAAA took out the prize in collaboration for their Melbourne School of Design project, which was heralded by the judging panel for its “creative and innovative use of timber”. Winners were announced on 17 September 2015 at a presentation dinner in Melbourne’s South Wharf. Industry members from the public sector, the timber industry, and the design and architecture field were in attendance to celebrate the best in Australian timber design for 2015.

The three-storey Melbourne School of Design building showcases laminated veneer lumber (LVL), engineered box beams, and coffers that span the 20 m wide atrium, which were all incorporated within the design to reduce the building’s carbon footprint.

The extensive use of timber meant that the school became the first education facility in Australia to be awarded the maximum 10 Green Star innovation credits.
