Pre-oiling, application and maintenance on exterior timber is no longer an issue in winter, thanks to Equisol technology and fast drying formulas. By Peter Sinner
Anyone involved in exterior timber coatings is aware that winter can be particularly challenging. Cold temperatures cause coatings to take much longer to dry, as the timber pores close up. Additionally, shorter daylight hours limit the time available for work on-site. Customers are also less likely to consider decking or maintenance during this season. That all adds up to harder times for those who make a living with exterior timber.
Equisol Professional Woodcare has an answer for that, with a complete system of products that timber yards, trades and builders across Australia use to extend their busy periods through the winter.
Equisol Pro E365 is a penetrating oil that will still dry in a short time in very cold weather.

DEVELOPING A SYSTEM OF YEAR- ROUND PRODUCTS
Juan Cruz, a partner at Equisol with over two decades of experience in fixing failed exterior timber coatings, shares how the company developed a cold weather king.
“Professionals want a simple, effective product that lasts. Having to return to a job site days later for a second coat or dealing with customer complaints about stickiness is a major inconvenience. That increases in winter, with many professionals forced to slow down or extend the jobs. Callbacks can be a financial death knell for the building sector.”
Pre-oiling during winter can also be problematic. Long drying times for wet stacked timber can result in wet, oily timber on site, leading to numerous issues.
Together with Peter Sinner, Equisol’s other partner and a 30-year veteran in creating business models, brands, product design, and marketing, Equisol aimed to develop a superior product.
“We combined all that experience with extensive product knowledge of other coatings on the market,” Peter said. “It took years and many iterations to perfect Equisol’s penetrating oil.”
Using environmentally friendly, modified linseed oils in the formulation, the product resonated with builders, tradespeople, and asset owners who are increasingly concerned about chemicals, the environment and sustainability.
Equisol Pro E365 and Equisol Rapid pre- oiling formulations are now utilised across Australia in sensitive areas, including wildlife parks, eco-resorts, national parks, children’s play equipment, and youth camps.

EXTENDING THE SEASON
Trades in colder areas like Geelong can now work almost all year.
“It definitely helped our business,” said Mathew Holt, owner of Deck Out Geelong, “Equisol’s fast drying formula keeps my trucks on the road coating and maintaining decks right through our wonderful Antarctic months!”
“On top of that, we can get off sites fast. In warmer months we can do a whole deck prep and coat in a single day enabling us to complete more decks in less time. Equisol’s quick drying time enables faster repeat coats as well. That makes the work far more efficient and profitable for us.”
“And people love the product because it works.”
Shane Cogdell from Refresh a Deck in Albury recounted a bitterly cold job.
“Equisol was the only penetrating oil that would dry on the exterior deck at Gundagai courthouse. Despite mid-winter single digit temperatures, sleet during the day and below zero at night, we encountered no issues with cleaning and oiling the timber.”
“We have since maintained the deck twice, always during the depths of winter.”
DON’T OVERLOOK WINTER MAINTENANCE.
Juan explained why winter maintenance should not be overlooked.
“Most people don’t consider their decks during winter, but cold weather can significantly damage exposed timber and decks that need maintenance. The lack of sunlight and prolonged cold dampness from morning dew and frost can accelerate water damage and lead to rot. Additionally, winter mould can develop and become a serious issue by spring.”
His message is simple. “With Equisol you can get your winter coat on and get back to business.”
